“Verity”, the bestselling psychological thriller novel by Colleen Hoover, is making its way to the big screen, bringing the gripping, twist-filled story to life. The film adaptation promises to capture the book’s suspense and dark romance, following an aspiring writer who uncovers a shocking secret about the bestselling author she has been hired by to finish a series of novels for.
The film’s main character, Verity, is meant to be played by Golden Globes and Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway and is directed by Michael Showalter for Amazon MGM Studios. Critics and fans have been open about their excitement for the film adaptation.
“I’m very excited, because I loved the book, and I can’t wait to see how it’s transformed into a movie,” junior Rafi Sibony said.
However, this movie will not be appropriate for everyone. Due to the content, many have suggested that the age of viewers should start at young adults.
Junior Rhea Kotak said, “I would recommend young adults to watch the movie because I feel like they would understand it better and relate more.”
Colleen Hoover is a #1 New York Times best-selling author who focuses on romance and thriller books. She debuted her first book “Slammed” in 2012, and since then, she has published 26 books. Her #1 best-selling book, “It Ends With Us” was adapted into a movie that came out in theaters in August 2024. However, controversy sparked surrounding the movie, because of actress Blake Lively, who played the main character, Lily Bloom. Lively was said to have treated the movie about domestic violence loosely, losing the meaning of the serious plot.
“I felt like the book could have been portrayed better as there were some parts that just weren’t captured as good…[since it was] based on such a sensitive topic,” Kotak said.
On the other hand, some thought it was a powerful depiction of real-life circumstances.
“I thought the plot itself was very emotional because it was such a tough topic to talk about, especially for anyone who has experienced domestic abuse themselves,” junior Talia Jacob said. “I think those who didn’t like it read the book previously and had higher expectations for the cast.”

Controversy surrounding the movie isn’t the only buzz around Hoover – her writing style has been a big topic of discussion since she grew to fame.
“I love her books. I hated reading until I read her books. Her writing style is so good because she switches people every chapter and it’s so entertaining.” senior Chloe Abramson said.
However, others feel her writing doesn’t live up to their expectations.
“A lot of her writing is very predictable and cliche” Sibony said.
The anticipation for “Verity” is only beginning, gaining rising media presence and conversation on social media platforms. Hoover’s fame both inspires and sparks debate throughout the film and writing industry.
