Jafaar Jackson proved he was Michael Jackson’s nephew with his incredible performance in the new biographical film “Michael.” The new movie is rated PG-13 and can be found in theaters, specifically Landmark in Closter Plaza. The tickets typically cost between $20-$25 at this location.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the movie follows Michael Jackson from his early childhood in the Jackson 5 to his global rise to fame later in life. The movie shows key moments in his career, including the creation of his famous “Thriller” album and his complicated relationship with his father. However, at times, the movie focuses more on the music and performances rather than going deeper into some of the more complicated parts of his life. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes believed that “Michael” was a watered down illustration of Jackson and his struggles because it failed to capture the scandals that affected his image later on in life. On the other hand, the audiences explained that Jackson’s main impact was his music and the way he connected people, and they thought that the movie accurately depicted that.
Considering that this movie is Jafaar Jackson’s first acting role, his depiction of Michael Jackson impressed many and the resemblance to his uncle was uncanny. There have been previous Michael Jackson documentaries including “Leaving Neverland” released in 2019 and the Tony winning broadway show, “MJ the Musical,” yet no single actor has portrayed Michael Jackson in a movie until now. The success of the new movie has sparked a new love for Michael Jackson for younger generations and has revived the admiration many had for him.
In my opinion, the film stands out not only because of its story, but also because of the way it is produced. The acting, especially by Jaafar Jackson, is one of the strongest aspects of the movie. He encapsulates Jackson’s voice, movements and stage presence in a way that feels extremely realistic. The speech and tone of Michael Jackson in the movie was completely the work of Jaafar, but for the singing they blended Jafaar’s live vocals that he performed on set with Jackson’s original recordings. The concerts in the movie are energetic and exciting, making the audience feel like they are actually watching Michael Jackson perform live. The movie is extremely engaging and does a fantastic job showing why and how Jackson became such a huge global icon. However, it does feel slightly incomplete because it avoids going deeper into some of the more controversial or difficult parts later on in his life. Although, the ending of the movie hints that there could possibly be a second part that will continue his story through to his death.

The cinematography helps support the contrast between the flashy concert scenes and the personal intimate moments. The directors incorporated bright lights and fast paced shots during concerts while using darker tones and long shots during the more serious moments. The costumes and set design are also very detailed and accurate to each time period, including Michael Jackson’s iconic rhinestone glove that he wore to cover his vitiligo.
One of the most prevalent parts of the movie is the music. It includes many of Michael Jackson’s most popular songs, which adds excitement and familiarity for older viewers. Songs like those from “Thriller,” MJ’s most mainstream album, shows the audience his impact on music and pop culture in general.
Overall, “Michael” is an engaging and exciting film that depicts Michael Jackson’s talent and influence. While it may not cover every part of his life in detail, it succeeds in bringing his music and legacy to a new generation.
