This year, the 152nd Kentucky Derby race was held in Churchill Downs, Kentucky. Every year thousands of people attend and dress up in fancy hats, dresses, and suits. Additionally, they make bets on who will win. All the horses line up at the gates and once the bell goes off, they come flying out. The race is a mile and a quarter in total. This year the winner was Golden Tempo and his jockey Jose Ortiz. It was a very special race because his trainer Cherie DeVaux is the first female trainer to win ever.
“Golden gave us the race of a lifetime in the Kentucky Derby, and we believe the best decision for him moving forward is to give him a little more time following such a tremendous effort. His health, happiness and long-term future will always remain our top priority,” DeVaux said according to CBS Sports.

This was a very special win in more ways than one, as Jose Ortiz crossed the finish line with his brother, Irad Ortiz riding right beside him.
“I was following Irad…I felt like he was the horse to beat,” Jose Ortiz said according to WDRB.
While Jose Ortiz knew that his brother was his biggest competition, he always looked up to and held deep respect for him. No matter the circumstances, It’s very important for them to always be brothers at the end of the day.
“The way I was moving through the lane, I felt like it was going to be hard for somebody to go by me. As soon as I thought maybe I could get there, I felt somebody outside of me and I was like, ‘no way.’ Then I looked and it was Jose,” Irad Ortiz said according to Paulickreport.com.
Golden Tempo and his jockey Jose Ortiz went from last place to first place crossing the finish line with a final time of 2:02.27.
According to WDRB, “I knew always Golden Tempo would be my Derby mount…This is an incredible experience. I just won the Kentucky Derby,”Jose Ortiz said.
