There’s a point in every doom scroll when it just stops being fun. You’re scrolling through videos, switching between the same apps, and suddenly an hour disappears without realizing. Free time doesn’t have to be filled with extended periods of time scrolling on social media, but rather with productivity that will improve your day.
One of the simplest ways to upgrade your time is to grab coffee with a friend. It sounds so simple, but there’s something so fun about chatting with a friend and taste-testing a fun drink together. After all, it’s a built-in excuse to try a new drink or find a cute café.
“I always see local fun drinks on my for you page that I check out with my friends all the time,” senior Eden Shaul said.
A more active way of using your time is doing yoga. Rather than intensely working your body, yoga is a good way to stay mindful, reduce stress, and improve focus. It’s a practical way to reset after a long day of schoolwork and responsibilities.
“I love doing yoga and pilates, sometimes even before school,” junior Reese Shulman said. “It makes me feel really productive and helps me stay active too.”
Creative and personal hobbies are another rewarding way to spend your free time. Activities such as baking, journaling, painting, and more, are all skill-building activities that apply a sense of accomplishment, even in small amounts.
“Whenever I’m stressed or bored I bake something, and it’s become one of my favorite things to do in my free time,” junior Charlotte Neher said.

Spending time outside also provides another refreshing alternative to scrolling. Walking through your neighborhood, visiting a park, or even simply sitting outside can improve one’s mood and provide a needed break from constant online stimulation to the brain. Fresh air and natural surroundings often help restore energy and concentration.
“I like to hang out with my family after school and go on walks or bike rides with them,” English teacher Dave Caminiti said. “I also love to play golf and go to the range when I can.”
Community involvement is another meaningful option. Volunteering, attending local events, or supporting your peers can all provide a sense of community and purpose while also strengthening connections with others.
“I volunteer at the local food brigade when I’m free and it always gives me a sense of happiness,” junior David Mateescu said.
The goal isn’t to eliminate screen time, but to create a healthy balance. By incorporating a small task here and there and doing simple activities, free time can become something that is fulfilling and purposeful.
