Dianna Russini, an NFL journalist and insider for over a decade, has become the center of one of the biggest controversies in recent sports after photos of her with the New England Patriots head coach, Mike Vrabel, surfaced in early April 2026.

The pictures of Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel, head coach of the New England Patriots, were taken at a resort in Sedona, Arizona, which showed them spending time together outside of NFL-related events. These photos showed them holding hands, hugging, sitting together, and dancing. 

On April 7 2026, the pictures were published, and the story immediately went viral. Many people online started to question the nature of their relationship. After the photos began circulating, both Russini and Vrabel released statements. Russini argues that the pictures do not show the full context, denying any wrongdoing.

“The photos don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day. Like most journalists in the NFL, reporters interact with sources away from stadiums and other venues,” Russini said. 

Similarly, Mike Vrabel’s first statement on the matter avoided admitting to doing anything wrong.

“It was important to me to have a conversation with the players, which I did yesterday very candidly,” Vrabel said. “We begin our offseason program, which everyone is excited to be a part of,” Vrabel said.

Previously, Russini was employed at The Athletic as an NFL reporter. After the first photos were released, The Athletic initially defended her, saying the photos lacked context. However, as the situation continued to gain attention, The Athletic opened an internal investigation to assess the situation and whether professional standards had been violated.

The controversy also sparked wider debates across sports media about professional ethics and the relationship between reporters and their sources. 

Some people argue that the scandal reinforced stereotypes about female sports reporters using personal relationships to gain information, which is something that many women in sports journalism have spent decades pushing back against. Others argue that Russini is being judged more harshly and having to face more backlash because she is a woman in a male-dominated industry.

After the first photos of them together started to make headlines, another source came forward with photos of Russini and Vrabel at a New York City bar from over 6 years ago. The photos clearly showed them kissing and cuddling, intensifying the scrutiny surrounding them.  

According to People, “They were kissing and they were all over each other. He had a ring on,” a source who was at the bar said. 

Vrabel has been married to his wife, Jen, since 1999, with whom he has two children. Russini started dating her current husband in 2015, and they got married in September, 2020. Since then, Russini and her husband have had two children.

There is a growing theory online that Russini named her oldest child, Michael, after Mike Vrabel. Russini posted a tweet in 2021 that many people have cited in discussions of the controversy.

“Keep looking at my almost 4-day-old son, Michael, while trying to figure out who the best ‘Michael’ is to ever play and coach in the NFL?” Russini tweeted.

The scandal has reportedly caused major strain on both Russini and Vrabel’s marriages. One source said that Russini’s marriage has been struggling for a while.

“Her husband has felt sidelined for a long time, and this controversy might be what finally pushes things to a breaking point,” the source said.

Since the story has continued to dominate headlines and more details are uncovered every day, Vrabel released a statement saying he was planning on skipping the third day of the NFL draft to attend counseling with his family, saying that,

“As I said the other day, I promised my family, this organization, and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me that I can possibly give them. To do so, I have committed to seeking counseling, starting this weekend… My priorities right now are my wife, my children, and making sure I become a better man moving forward,” Vrabel said to Yahoo Sports.

Additionally, Russini resigned from her job as a reporter for The Athletic following weeks of public backlash. However, shortly after her resignation, sports media talk show host Jon Weiner publicly offered Russini a future role on his “Stugotz and Company” podcast.

“I did say if The Athletic fired her, I would hire her. They didn’t fire her. She stepped down from The Athletic, and this offer still holds,” Weiner said to Page Six News                               

Weiner also said that if Russini ever decides to return to sports media, she “has a place here.” Russini, who has since deleted all social media, has not stated publicly whether she would consider joining the show.

What began as a viral set of photos quickly grew into one of the most talked-about controversies in recent sports media, sparking debates about professional ethics. While Russini stepped down from her job at The Athletic and Vrabel is seeking counseling with his family, the fallout from the scandal is likely to continue long after the headlines begin to fade.

“It might not fade even into the NFL season’s kickoff, barring a scandal-ending moment — like Vrabel resigning or getting fired, or somebody telling the truth about what actually happened,” Fox News said.
