Taylor Swift’s new album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” marks another major pop music release, but not a very memorable one. Even though it sold more than 4 million copies in its first week, many people agree that the album feels performative compared to her many other works.
This album focuses more on musicality and public image rather than relatability and emotional depth. Instead of prioritizing vulnerability and connecting with her fans, Swift seems more focused on creating a character and crafting her public image.
Unlike other pop stars, such as Sabrina Carpenter, Swift’s fans have higher expectations for deep and authentic songwriting because of her reputation for writing very genuine lyrics in her past albums.
“Sabrina Carpenter’s music also has playful and basic lyrics, but people expect that from her because that is her brand and what her music is known for,” junior Meeka Cop said.
Some fans have noticed that she seems out of touch in parts of the album. In some songs, her lyrics focus more on fame and status rather than her usual relatable storytelling. Fans who have appreciated her honest and heartfelt lyrics in the past felt that this album didn’t live up to their expectations.
“The lyrics were too simple. Some didn’t really make sense,” junior Sheridan Wertz said. “I thought ‘Eldest Daughter’ was going to be good, but I was lost after the first verse.”
Although her lyrics might’ve fallen short, the album’s instrumentals are catchy and can appeal to people who enjoy energetic pop music over heartfelt country music.
“In my dance studio, we are always playing her new album since it has a very fun and hype vibe,” Cop said.
“The Fate of Ophelia” is the most-streamed song off this album for many reasons. It broke the record for the most single-day and single-week streams in Spotify history. Even the haters have to admit it’s catchy.
“The only song that I like is ‘The Fate of Ophelia.’ The more I listen to it, the more I start to like it,” Wertz said. “The dance she did in the music video went viral, and I keep seeing it on TikTok.”
Although it has flaws, “The Life of a Showgirl” highlights Taylor Swift’s long-lasting influence in the pop music industry. This album is well-produced and catchy, but it lacks the vulnerability and lyrical depth that fans expect from Taylor Swift’s music. Overall, this album is a statistical success but a lyrical step back.
“I enjoyed her(Taylor Swift’s) new album, it’s much more upbeat than her other albums,” Cop said.
