Earlier in March, members of NVD’s DECA chapter traveled to Atlantic City to compete in the state competition, and came back with great results. Students competed in a variety of business related events and many qualified for the International Career Development Conference (ICDC).
The chapter saw noticeable improvement from last year, with more students placing in their events and advancing to the international level. The competition was not only an opportunity to showcase business and marketing skills, but also a chance for members to support one another and celebrate each other’s achievements.
NVD DECA chapter president, senior Ava Pavlos talks about her initial goals and objectives in the beginning of the year and how her hard work paid off.
“One of the objectives I had when I was applying for president was to increase the number of members that qualified for states and ICDC, and I can confidently say that this goal was achieved. Over 20% more members qualified for states, and our finalist number doubled,” Pavlos said.

Qualifying for states and then nationals is both challenging and competitive, which is why it was crucial for members to put their time and effort into preparation if they wanted to qualify.
“I noticed who went to preparation sessions, who practiced for their roleplays/presentations, studied for the tests, etc., and this was reflected by their performance at states,” Pavlos said.
The NVD DECA chapter continues to succeed and represent the school proudly. Although the club is widely recognized, many students are still unsure on how to qualify and gain the business experience they are looking for. Pavlos gives advice for current and upcoming DECA members who want to make the most out of their club experience.
“Find an event that you love and are passionate about. When you actually like what you are doing and enjoy it, everything you do gets reflected in your test and roleplay score, and your overall performance is more genuine,” Pavlos said.
