Deeper Look Into Highschool Production of “She Kills Monsters”

Jacob Kauderer, Staff Writer

NVD’s fall play, She Kills Monsters, will debut on November 17 and play through November 19.

The play tells the story of Agnes Evans, a teenage girl who loses her parents and little sister, Tilly, in a car accident. To know her late sister better, Agnes plays an adventure game that Tilly wrote called Dungeons & Dragons. What awaits is something she could have never imagined…

Director David Marconi explains that he chose She Kills Monsters because it “is a play very near and dear to me.”

“As someone who grew up in the 90s as a D&D nerd, this play hits home. I also feel like the show’s themes carry through today and is a very poignant coming-of-age story. Since D&D has exploded into pop culture thanks to media like ‘Stranger Things’, it just seemed like the right time for the show,” Marconi explained.

“I tried directing a virtual version of SKM back at the start of the pandemic, and despite it resulting in a brief mention in The NY Times, that production never came out how I imagined it. This is another chance for me to deliver my original vision,” Marconi said.

“D&D! Sword Fighting! Rock & Roll! Dance Battles! Monsters! This show has it all!” Marconi said.

Senior Emily Kauderer is participating in her first in-person play and her fifth production overall. Emily plays the lead role of Agnes in this production.  This will be her final play at Northern Valley Demarest.

“It’s a new experience. It is very exciting but at the same time I am a little sad knowing that this will be one of my last bows on the NVD stage. As someone who has only done musicals, being a part of the play has been such a new experience and I’ve learned a lot more about what goes into a solely spoken show” Kauderer said.
