As the new school year starts up, rumors have been circulating that upperclass students can now leave the school when their teacher is absent.
Last school year, students would have to sit in the cafeteria or the auditorium when they had a sub. Students began to ask why they couldn’t leave the school during these periods.
As a result of these comments, the school board has decided to comply with student’s wants. The details about this change have caused some commotion among the students.
Jackson Dickstein, a senior here at NVD, is excited about this new change but has some complaints.
“I’m excited that we can leave now and think it was a good decision, but it’s kind of annoying that we have to come in and check in for attendance before signing out. What if we had a sub after lunch or after a free,” Dickstein said.
Students love the freedom of being able to leave now, but having to still go into the cafeteria before leaving is causing backlash from students.
This is because if students were already out of school for lunch or a free period, they would now have to come back into school to check in for the class their teacher is out, before leaving again. This wastes a lot of time for the students who already have shorter periods.
Another senior at NVD, Ava Buckley, also has similar opinions on this change.
“I love that we can leave for subs because I feel like students weren’t getting much done during the period and people would try to leave the school anyway,” Buckley said.
This outlook on the change seems to be a common consensus amongst the students.
A junior at NVD, Schyuler Berenbroick, recently gained privileges to leave the school starting this year. So she has a slightly different view of the situation.
“This is my first year being able to leave the school, so I hadn’t experienced the struggle of having my teacher out and now being able to leave. But, I’m really happy that we can leave ’cause I just feel like it made the most sense being that we didn’t have substitute teachers anyway,” Berenbroick said.
Most students are in agreement about this switch in NVD.
“I think most students are really happy about this change and it was definitely a good idea,” Berenbroick said.
