And the Oscar goes to…

The 96th annual Oscars have ended and there were many twists and turns throughout the night. Jimmy Kimmel was the host and led the show throughout the long evening. The Oscars is an event filled with celebrations, so why not watch the winners receive their awards?

There were many first-time winners this year. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, an actress who started on Broadway, won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the film “The Holdovers.” Her performance captivated audiences and brought honest emotion to her character, a grieving mother.

“For so long, I’ve always wanted to be different,” Randolph said during her acceptance speech, documented by CNN.com. “And now I realize I just need to be myself and I thank you. I thank you for seeing me.”

A big moment that people were excited about was Ryan Gosling’s performance of his song“I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie.” Nothing like this has happened in the past, so people did not know what to expect. Gosling took the crowd by storm, spreading the “Kenergy” throughout the Dolby Theatre. Along with Gosling, “Barbie” had a surprising award season. “Barbie” received one win out of the eight it was nominated for. The winner was Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s “What Was I Made For?” which was created for “Barbie” in the category Best Original Song.

The film “Poor Things” had some success during this year’s show. It won four awards at the Oscars. Many people were rooting for Lily Gladstone’s win but were surprised by Emma Stone’s. Emma Stone was the star of Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” film. While Gladstone had a riveting performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Stone’s performance was equally impressive, allowing her to win.

“The other night, I was panicking, as you can kind of see, happens a lot — that maybe something like this could happen and Yorgos [Lanthimos] said to me, please take yourself out of it,” Stone said which was documented by Variety.com.

Upon the success of “Poor Things,” another film received attention this year’s award season. “Oppenheimer” was a film people were looking forward to throughout 2023. It had success at the box office and during the awards season. “Oppenheimer” won seven Oscars out of the 13 it was nominated for. It was Chris Nolan’s first win after being nominated in previous years. After being the director of many Oscar-nominated and award-winning films, he is getting the recognition that he deserves.

Cillian Murphy has received his first Oscar for Best Actor for his performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy has been in other notable projects, like “Peaky Blinders” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” that people may recognize him.

Along with the previous first-time winners who were a part of “Oppenheimer” is Robert Downey Jr. He has been nominated in the past, and finally won an Oscar for his acting skills. His speech included thanks to people close to him and another heartwarming message.

“What we do is meaningful and the stuff we decide to make is important,” Downey said during his acceptance speech, noted by usatoday.com.

The biggest and most anticipated award was for Best Picture. After commercial breaks, trailers for the films nominated for Best Picture were showcased throughout the night. Due to the success of each of the films during the night, nerves were high, and this reveal would change the winners’ lives.

To announce the winner of Best Picture, they got Al Pacino. When Pacino got on stage, he wasted no time and got straight to the point to announce the winner of Best Picture as “Oppenheimer.” People were confused by the decision to just say the winner instead of announcing the other nominees. The cast and crew of “Oppenheimer” joined together to celebrate their victory of winning Best Picture for this year’s Oscars ceremony.

This was an award show filled with surprises and fun. The celebration continued with the Vanity Fair after party where the attendees were able to join together and celebrate their peer’s accomplishments.
