Taylor Swift, the most famous singer in the music industry, has had an incredible career. Many of her songs are written about love and boyfriends and some people will say that’s all she writes about and that she can’t do anything else. However, they’re wrong. Each boyfriend that Taylor Swift has written a song about has influenced and taught her audience something new and valuable.

Throughout her career, Swift has had a list of exes who have been amazing or treated her terribly which is seen through her profound and intense songs. Each boyfriend has added something new to Swift’s music.

To start off with one of Taylor’s firsts boyfriends: Taylor Lautner. Lautner and Swift started dating for several months in 2009 and still have a friendship to this day. Lautner even appeared in Swift’s new music video  “I Can See You” that came out in 2023. He also made a guest appearance at her era’s tour. 

The public loves to see both of them still in contact after splitting up in a very civil and friendly manner. Lautner is most definitely a fan favorite and people have only good words to speak about him.

Furthermore, in 2010, Swift started dating John Mayer who truly made a mark on her music and in her life. Taylor’s third album, “Speak Now,” has multiple songs written about Mayer including “Dear John,” “The Story of Us,” and “Ours.” When they dated, Swift was 19 and Mayer was 32, and the relationship did not end well. Mayer had taken advantage of Swift clearly, and had to pay the price from the thousands of Swifties who continue to hate on him, even 13 years later. Mayer is one of Swift’s worst and nastiest boyfriends. 

Swift says it herself, “Dear John, I see it all now, it was wrong, Don’t you think nineteen’s too young/To be played by your dark, twisted games when I loved you so?” 

Next up, Jake Gyllenhal. Now Jake Gyllenhal is also one of Swift’s most hated and influential boyfriends. He is the man behind “All Too Well” and a huge portion of her album, “Red.” Gyllenhal had called it quits due to the overwhelming amount of press their relationship had gotten. Even so, Swift’s lyrics express her true and heartbreaking feelings behind the breakup. In “All Too Well,” she writes, “And you call me up again just to break me like a promise/ So casually cruel in the name of being honest/ I’m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here/’Cause I remember it all, all, all/Too well.”

Swift’s fans empathized with her so much that they started to hate Gyllenhal just as much Swift did. Although Gyllenhal hurt Taylor immensely, she still produced one of the best songs of her career due to him, turning him into an essential part of Swift’s history.

After Jake Gyllenhal came Harry Styles. Now Harry Styles was definitely a fan favorite. Styles and Swift are two of the most popular pop-stars who finally got together. They had a cutesy, fun, loving, relationship that everyone buzzed about. Harry Styles inspired Swift’s song, “Style,” which is one of her most prominent songs with over 600 million streams on Spotify. Personally, I love to see Styles and Swift together due to how perfect they are for each other, they are basically the guy/girl version of each other.

In 2015 came Calvin Harris. Harris and Swift dated for a little over a year and became a very well known couple. However, it is clear that Harris neglected Swift through her song’s, “Gorgeous,” “High Infidelity,” and more. Swift’s friends have also said that Harris was intimidated by her success which is why he would not attend award shows with her unless she was nominated. Clearly, this was a toxic relationship and Swift could do a lot better. She needed a man who would support her and be there for her every step of the way, which is when she met Joe Alywn. 

Joe Alwyn and Swift started dating in 2017. They were together for six years until they recently split, which sent a wave of shock and sadness to every Swifty. People thought Alwyn and Swift were going to get married so when we heard that it was over, it was as if they were all experiencing heartbreak. 

Joe Alwyn is an English actor and their whole relationship was kept private and intimate which was a smart choice. Based off of Taylor’s songs, they met at the 2016 Met Gala and then in November of 2016, Swift disappeared from the public eye. No one knew where she was and if she was ever coming back. The main reason was due to her public feud with Kanye West and the immense amount of hate she got that she couldn’t handle anymore.

However, about a year and a half later Taylor came back and released her album “Reputation,” and then “Lover,” and finally her documentary, “Miss Americana.” In her movie and through her new songs we found out about how perfectly Alwyn treated Swift. Unfortunately, they split in April of 2023 due to different lifestyles that kept them from maintaining their relationship. 

Taylor Swift is now dating Travis Kelce, two time Super-bowl champion and one of the most popular football players. Their relationship has already gotten an incredible amount of press but is brand new so there is still much that can happen. 

Taylor Swift is often defined by the men she’s dated but that is not what has made her successful. It is a false narrative that Swift is famous because of her “boyfriends.” She has become a cultural figure of the 21st century and the highest-paid female singer in the entire world and needed no man to get there.
