On May 18, 2025, the office of former US President Joe Biden announced he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It was stated that the illness had spread to his bones, rendering him physically weak and placing him in critical condition. Such a discovery was made after Biden complained of urinary symptoms, leading his physicians to find a cancerous nodule on his prostate. The Biden family has recently withdrawn from the public eye, making few appearances to focus on finding suitable treatments for their ailing member.
Prostate cancer remains one of the second largest types of cancer affecting men, only coming second behind skin cancer. Biden’s cancer has been classified as being in “Stage 4,” meaning the illness has already spread to the majority of his body. While intensive treatment can counteract its effects, the chance of survival is a possibility, placing the Bidens in a precarious situation.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” the statement from Mr. Biden’s office said.
The office of Joe Biden appears hopeful that he will maintain a full recovery, placing great trust on the idea of pill treatment. The cancer around prostate cancer is fuelled by the testosterone in one’s body. In order to prevent its growth, a patient can take a pill that blocks testosterone production, thus effectively stopping its effects. Dr. Moul, a researcher of cancer growth at Duke University, commented on its efficiency.
“Survival rates have almost tripled in the last decade,” he said.
Many have shared their condolences towards the Biden family, often utilizing social media to convey their messages. Joe Biden is set to receive treatment in late-May, and will cease public appearances until its end.
“Joe is a fighter—and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership,” Kamala Harris said. “We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”
