As the end of the school year is rapidly approaching, the end of the spring sports season is also drawing near. Teams are preparing for playoffs, tournaments, senior nights and much more in the final weeks.
The NVD track team is currently undefeated after their league meet on Friday, May 2 which they hosted. The boys’ team won 199-86, and the girls’ won 159-132. Senior Gaby Rothstein set a new school record for the 400m race. The previous record was held for 43 years, making it the longest-standing school record.
Sophomore Lila McElroy explains her thoughts on the season so far. “So far we’ve won every meet and broken school records. Soon we have counties which will hopefully be a success,” McElroy said.
The girls lacrosse team is currently at a 5-6 record after coming off a win over Passaic Valley. In a previous game against Indian Hills, sophomore Zoe Gatanas’ skills were crucial in the team’s 5-4 win. Gatanas totaled one goal, two assists, five ground balls, five draw controls, and eight turnovers to aid her team to victory.
“Our season has been a big success. We have a very high chance of winning leagues which would be the first time in program history for girls lacrosse,” Gatanas said.
The boys’ lacrosse team, with only enough players for one team, has continued to work hard throughout the season and managed a 4-6 record. Seniors Peter Kurys and Luke LaPira joined the lacrosse team for the first time, and with little experience, have shown a commitment for the team and effort to help lead their team to victory.
Deana Finklestein and Daniella Baker both hit huge milestones for the NVD softball team. Finklestein hit 200 strikeouts and Baker hit 100, ultimately leading their team to many successes and wins this season. Currently, the team is sitting at a 6-10 record right now with plenty of their season left for both varsity and junior varsity. Freshman Bellamy Ferullo reflects on the season and the successes from all the players.
“We’re more than half way through the season and have more opportunities for wins…the team has improved a lot and given people opportunities to hit personal and school goals,” Ferullo said.
The baseball team, after three straight losses, is back up after their win against Fort Lee and their win over Waldwick in the Bergen County Invitational, in the preliminary round. They are currently sitting at a 7-7 record, and will soon face Ridgewood in the first round of the invitational. As the season progresses, sophomore Jaxon Austria explains the ups and downs of the season.
“Our biggest accomplishments as a team are our walk offs. We came back from a run deficit and ended up with the win. There has been a lot of improvement since the start of the season. We are hitting better, pitching better, and better team chemistry over all,” Austria said.
After four straight wins, the boys’ volleyball team is on the road to success with only six games remaining. Not a part of the remaining six games left, the volleyball team will also compete in the Bergen County Tournament. Their first-round game is against Bergen Charter on Friday, May 9.
With many NVD sports teams nearing the end of their seasons, there are still many important games and opportunities for success. Once the spring season concludes, fall sports will begin having interest meetings and sign ups for pre-season to begin in August, so be ready for emails and alerts for a chance to get involved!
