Prior to 2024’s end, families and friends came together to discuss their aspirations for the new year, known to many as New Year’s resolutions. While New Year’s resolutions can be beneficial to improving oneself in the year to come, most of the time these goals are un-accomplishable and not followed through upon, leading people to wonder; are New Year’s resolutions powerful or pointless?
Freshman Sophia Hwang reflects on her New Year’s resolution for the upcoming year.
“My New Year’s resolution this year is to find the positive things instead of dwelling on the negatives. Even now, in the first weeks of 2025, I am happier and have grown as a person from looking at the positives in life,” Hwang said.
Avery Morrison, a freshman at NVD, has also set goals for the new year.
“In the new year I want to eat healthier and stop procrastinating,” Morrison said.
This is a very popular resolution as according to Pew Research Center, 79% of people make New Year’s resolutions regarding health.
On the contrary, freshman Reese Chiat did not make New Year’s resolutions for 2025.
“It didn’t occur to me to make New Year’s resolutions this year. I guess I just forgot about it. I have made New Year’s resolutions in the past though,” Chiat said.
Similarly, freshman Emma Gutierrez set goals in past years but not for this year.
“I made resolutions in prior years but I ended up forgetting about them before completing them. Due to that, I didn’t think about making resolutions for 2025,” Gutierrez said.
New Year’s resolutions are a personal preference and students at NVD have alternative opinions on whether they are powerful or pointless.
“Like all goals, if they are just words and not backed by actions then resolutions are pointless,” Morrison said.
Similarly, Hwang thinks the impact of New Year’s resolutions is situational.
“I think they are powerful depending on what your goal is. Changing your mindset is easier to accomplish than an unattainable goal,” she said.
Chiat also has an opinion on the importance of New Year’s resolutions. The influence these goals have on someone’s life depends on the kind of person that they are.
“It depends on your determination. New Year’s resolutions can be both powerful and pointless,” she said.
