As the second week of January unfolds, Northern Valley Demarest’s girls basketball team is making moves in both North Jersey and state rankings. The Norsemen remain 10-0, showcasing an impressive record and determination to be a dominant force in New Jersey basketball this winter.
On Jan. 7, NJ.com ranked Demarest #3 in North Jersey, and they further solidified their status by defeating the #2 seed, Teaneck, 52-49. Following their win, NJ.com ranks the Norsemen #14 in the state.
Under the leadership of head coach Jenny Jurjevic, they continue to work toward success.
Jurjevic said, “Our success has come from hard work, intense practices and preparation.”
Senior guard/forward Angelina Tirado has emerged as a standout player this season, putting up impressive numbers. With 143 points and 53 rebounds as of mid-January, Tirado has proven to be a key aspect to the Norsemen’s success.
“This team is special because we all have a competitive drive and a winning mentality. We are also all focused on the end goal of states/counties,” Tirado said.
With the season only midway through, the Norsemen have plenty of time to continue this domination in county and league play.
“I think we can win counties and states while in the process of making NVD a name in Bergen county girls basketball,” Tirado said.
Demarest will undoubtedly face more tough challenges with games against Chatham and Pascack Valley. As the season progresses, expect Demarest to be a name that’s spoken about in county and state circles for the foreseeable future.
“It’s a long season, we have flaws and imperfections. Nothing and no one is perfect. The rest of the season will be determined by our response to our mistakes. We must get up and push through the ups and downs a competitive schedule comes with,” Jurjevic said.
