Whether or not a 1,000-calorie cookie is worth it is debatable; however, most people are willing to pass over the nutritional consequences for a desirable dessert. Crumbl Cookies, the cookie brand taking social media by storm, has become a hot topic on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The assortment of cookies changes each week, featuring flavors ranging from chocolatey to fruity, and always sugary! The recent controversy about the caloric value of the cookies has prompted the question: is a 1,000-calorie cookie worth it?
Crumbl was introduced in 2017 by CEO Jason McGowan and his cousin Sawyer Hemsley. The humble shop started off selling solely chocolate chip cookies and quickly gained popularity. Today, Crumbl sells around 250 different cookie flavors, the most popular including chocolate crumb cake ft. Oreo, Cookies and Creme, and S’mores. The U.S. brand has gained so much national recognition that Australian fans organized an unauthorized pop-up in North Bondi, Australia. The event organizers imported a large number of cookies from America and sold them for $17.50 each (according to The Daily Mail UK).
In June 2024, New Jersey’s first Crumbl Cookie opened in Wayne. Soon after, a closer-to-home Crumbl store opened in the Bergen Town Center in Paramus with lines that stretched around the block.
Junior Dina Mehanni said, “I once spent an hour and a half in the line for Crumbl.”
Mehanni isn’t the only one; people are willing to spend hours on line for a box of 4-6 cookies as shown by different influencers and Crumbl fans posting on social media. Their rise to fame is shown in their social media accounts as well: Crumbl Cookies TikTok account holds over seven million followers, and their Instagram account with six million.
However desirable Crumbl Cookies are, the fact is that their cookies reach close to 1,000 calories each. High levels of added sugar create a delicious, yet extremely unhealthy dessert. Nonetheless, many people find Crumbl worth it – even when each cookie reaches almost half the suggested daily calorie intake proposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Junior Grace Lee said, “I think the fact that it’s different flavors each week makes it very unique and intriguing … honestly, it just tastes so good!”
Opinions on the value of Crumbl Cookies vary, with many pointing out their low nutritional value. However, the brand’s success demonstrates that many customers are willing to overlook this key factor as they continue purchasing cookies each week.
Meanwhile, others think differently about the topic. Junior Ellie Rice says, “the cookies are definitely not worth it, because it’s 1,000 calories per cookie, and ‘900’ dollars per box!”
