The new season of the tv show “Outer Banks” left many fans disappointed with the outcome and plot change that was introduced. The first half of season four was released on October 10, which was a date many people were looking forward to because of the popularity and success of this Netflix series.
In prior seasons, the series was a huge hit for young adults. However, fans say that this season is going downhill, as they believe the plot is being dragged on. The director of the series, Jonas Pate, has added plot points throughout the series, meant to stir interest, which actually resulted in disinterest from the audience.
To begin, the new season reveals that one of the main characters, JJ Maybanks, has a mother figure who is significantly important to the plot of the new season. Pate has been dropping hints that there could be a familial relationship between JJ and Sarah Cameron, who is another main character, because they are both missing mother figures in the story. Some fans believe that the introduction of these potential family ties have weakened the plot.
“I think the idea of Sarah and JJ being related is pointless to the plot line and may add unnecessary drama,” sophomore Remi Actman said.
In the story, the island of Outer Banks is split into rich and poor, otherwise known as Kooks and Pogues. This big rivalry is a huge part of the plot in “Outer Banks” when rival Topper Thorton, who is a Kook, tries to find peace with the Pogues in a scene during the first episode of the new season. Topper also starts to pay more attention to the way his group treats others and seems to be feeling worse about the people he is associated with. The way that he approaches the Pogues makes it seem like he would rather be hanging out with them rather than his current friends.
“This season has been extremely unrealistic compared to the other seasons; there is no way that Topper will join the Pogues or successfully mend the relationship between the two groups. I also feel like he would never have the confidence, since he’s so focused on what other people think of him and how he appears to his Kook friends,” sophomore Jamie Shu said.
On the other hand, some students shared that aside from the unnecessary plot change, they enjoyed the story.
“Overall, I really like the show. However, I think that season 4 is completely different than the previous three seasons. I expected the show to continue on…but the plot and overall season itself is very different. It’s almost like it’s a completely new show,” sophomore Madison Stott said.
For the most part, students expressed that the new season was not what they expected compared to previous seasons, and the plot had more potential than what was released. Most agree that Pate could have done a better job making the seasons flow together by sticking to the same main plot instead of adding too many extra details.
“There’s so many unimportant details that keep getting added to every season which is not what the fans want,” Shu said.
