Seniors at NVD reminisced on their four-year journey during Senior Night, a tradition filled with nostalgia and celebration.
As they reflected on their journey, underclassmen stepped up to honor them in heartfelt ways. Teams competed or sacrificed their practice time to make sure the seniors felt honored and valued as they spent their last moments with their fall sport.
Teammates dedicated their time to ensuring that seniors had a memorable night, demonstrating the strong sense of community within the teams.
Senior Alec Stratton from the cross country team emphasized the role of the underclassmen.
“The underclassmen got together and made posters with pictures of the seniors. We all got together after practice with our coach to sign them and celebrate with some desserts. And the girls got Maya [Gueguen] a little gift bag because she is the only senior on the team,” Stratton said.
NVD’s football team honored their seniors during their game against Fort Lee, finishing the game with the score of 40-0.
Head coach Robert Petrella conveyed how successful that night was for his seniors.
“Jaden scored his first touchdown, Elan recovered a fumble, Peter and Luke got in on a sack. Noah got himself an interception, Marco scoring a touchdown on a trick play…” Petrella said.
Petrella details how special this group of seniors were.
“They’ve really helped change the culture and the standards of the program,” Petrella said.
Not only did football find success on senior night, but girls tennis defeated Teaneck with a 3-2 win. Seniors Kaitlyn Choi and Isabelle Young, dominated their matches 6-0. Additionally, girls soccer won their game 2-1 against Tenafly with senior Chloe Poirot scoring two goals within the last 10 minutes of the game.
Unfortunately, not all fall sports found success on their senior night, but that didn’t take away from the meaningful night. Field hockey lost to Old Tappen and boys soccer ended up losing against Bergenfield.
Junior Adrian Cami says, “The loss definitely stung, but the fact we were all able to have a good time after, proved how close we are as a team, not just on the field. It was a moment to truly appreciate all of them and the memories we’ve created as a team,” Cami said.
