This postseason, for the first time since 2000, both the New York Yankees and New York Mets have both reached the postseason League Championships, just a round away from the World Series. New York and baseball fans alike are all excited about the possibility of such an intense rivalry in the 2024 World Series.
“I have been a fan of [the Yankees] I think since I was born,” freshman Darienne Buckner said. “I want to see a Subway Series [but] in order for the Yankees to make it to the World Series they must overcome the pressure.”
After finishing first in their division and third overall, the New York Yankees became one of the favorites to win the World Series.
“I think [with] Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, Jake Cousins, and Carlos Rodon the Yankees could win [the World Series],” freshman Caitlyn Fontana said. “They need to not make mistakes and have good pitching.”
While the Yankees have their passionate supporters, the Mets also have a loyal fan base eager to take home a world series title.
“[I love the] Mets because my grandpa who came from the Philippines supported the Mets,” sophomore Lexi Webster said. “My middle name, Shea, was named after the Shea stadium where the Mets and Jets used to play.”
They, too, have strong players that could potentially carry them to the top.
“Pete Alonso [is great] since he is always reliable or Diaz as a closing pitcher,” Cresskill senior Ella Dimitriadis said. “[I also like] Francisco Lindor since he is one of the best players.”
Fans of both teams are eager to see the rivalry in action, especially with so much at stake.
“I am a Mets fan and I will never support the Yankees,” Webster said. “[I want a Subway Series] because the energy in New Jersey and New York would distract me from [school] and make me happier.”
As the excitement builds, differing expectations and rivalries emerge over which team has the upper hand.
“I believe the Yankees would win [a Subway Series] because they are the better team,” Fontana said. “I think that I would root for no one if the Yankees lost.”
There are also fans of both teams simply hoping for a New York championship overall.
“If the Yankees win the World Series I will be very happy for New York,” Buckner said. “[But] if one team gets eliminated I think I would root for the other team because they are both representing New York.”
Subway Series or not, there’s a good chance that either the Yankees or the Mets will take home a World Series title.
“[As a Met fan], I can appreciate both the Mets and Yankees [and] I would be happy if the Yankees won.” Dimitriadis said. “[Irregardless], I would love a Subway Series!”
