Meet the Cast of “Matilda”

Meet the Cast of "Matilda"

Alexandra Stanivukovic, Staff Writer

The spring musical is right around the corner at NVD, and the cast of “Matilda” is prepared to perform.

The spring musical is a highlight of the season at NVD, as demonstrated by last year’s performance of “Legally Blonde.”

The cast this year is a variety of those who were in last year’s musical, mixed with those new to theater, such as John Kim who’s playing Sergei.

This crew and cast have been building the production through late-night rehearsals and practices, where they cover everything from singing and dancing to lighting and sound.

“My favorite part of rehearsals are staging and choreography as you are able to get a feel for the stage and interact more with your fellow cast members,” cast member Savannah Brown said.

Many students from last year’s production have been involved in this year’s performance, such as Kate Schnall who’s playing the lead, Matilda. Those like Schnall have a deep connection to theater and the story of Matilda itself.

“I was always so in awe of the shows and all the performers and could imagine myself on that stage one day. In addition, this show has always had a very special meaning for me since I was in first grade when my teacher read Roald Dahl’s, Matilda. She wound up taking the class to see it on Broadway and watching it inspired me. At that moment I knew I wanted to perform and be just like those little kids up on that stage,” Schnall said.

As for Brown, she was a part of the stage crew for the “Legally Blonde” production but was drawn to the creativity and performance aspect of the production.

“Through the stage crew, I was introduced to the cast members and their rehearsals behind the scenes. Being able to see the musical transform from small rehearsals to the product we know today was very exciting. Watching the cast perform was so inspiring and I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself, hence why I wanted to join the musical this year,” Brown said.

Other cast members are just as excited to see their peer’s performances where they can shine on stage after months of hard work.

“I’m most excited to see Mrs. Wormwood,” Brown said.

But, the production couldn’t take place without the help of the crew. They continue behind the scenes in order to make this show possible.

“Crew and cast work together closely and are always working with one another. Anything from cueing the actors to handing an actor a prop, cast, and crew are by each other’s sides every step of the way,” Schnall said.

Those who are a part of the theater experience are excited and looking forward to opening night on March 3rd.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play this young girl who is faced with different kinds of hardship, but is able to rise above with her love for books and stories,” Schnall said.
