Often, the media is an excellent source of stress relief for overwhelmed students.   Movies, shows, and music are popular entertainment sources amongst teenagers today. There are many new releases to look forward to in various media entertainment genres in the coming year. 

Netflix has more show renewals in 2023, from teen soaps like “Ginny and Georgia” to adult series “You,” a vindictive and sinister show that follows a manipulative main character. Sophomore Saniya Shivnani is waiting for the upcoming season of “You.” “You” season 4 part one releases Feb 9 and Part two March 9.

“I am excited for “You” season three to see where the story goes after Love(one of the main characters) died,” she says. 

Another top-rated Netflix show that will return in 2023 is “Outer Banks.” 

 “Outer Banks” is a teen tv show following five teens on a different quest for some riches every season. Whether it’s cash or gold, the group will find it. These scavenger hunts arise from old tales from their island, “Outer Banks.” 

“I am excited for “Outer Banks” season three where they are on a mission to find treasures,” Riley Houck said. “Outer Banks” season three releases on February 23.

  Another streaming platform, CW, is releasing the second half of season five’s popular show “All-American.” The first half of season five aired Oct 10, 2022, but the second half will air this month. All-American is about a high-schooler who grows up in an underdeveloped community and gains opportunities through his talent in football. 

This show is top-rated amongst teenagers because the main character is in the same age group as the show’s viewers, and pursues his goals through his sport. It is also about people’s dedication to their high school sports careers. 

Sophomore Noah Chang is excited to finish the second half of the last released season, “I’m excited about All-American season 5 because I like football”, Chang said. 

Part two of “All American” airs on Jan. 23 and will be available to stream on Netflix a few months after its initial release. 

An upcoming movie to watch in 2023 is “Barbie.” It has a cast list of famous movie stars, like Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Will Ferell.  

Sophomore Kyra Sasmaz is looking forward to reliving nostalgia for the new Barbie movie, “I’m excited for the new “Barbie” movie because it was my favorite childhood toy,” Sasmaz said. “Barbie” releases on July 21.

Another movie coming out in 2023 is “Beau is Afraid,” directed by Ari Aster. Aster is a 36-year-old director that has produced many films but has only directed two. The two movies he has directed:” Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” are incredibly thrilling and scary. Chemistry teacher Mr. Kane explains, “I’m excited to watch the new Ari Aster movie “Beau is Afraid.” “Beau is Afraid” opens in theaters on April 21.

In recent years, the incredibly popular actor Timothee Chalamet has gained a large following.  The new “Wonka” movie stars Chalamet as the leading actor. It is a musical fantasy film that focuses on the early days of the candyman himself, Willy Wonka. 

Freshman Sarahi Marcus, who is one of Chalamet’s fans, is looking forward to this movie’s release. “I’m excited for the movie “Wonka” to come out because an actor I like is starring in it,” Marcus said. Wonka releases Dec 15.
